Shanmuga Sundaram Bharatanatyam Workshop

Shanmuga Sundaram is in Houston again!! Shanmuga Sundaram is a brilliant dancer, teacher and choreographer, and a disciple of Smt. K. J. Sarasa. He was trained initially in Malaysia, then moved to Chennai and became a devoted sishya, even taking care of his Guru during her long illness (for the past few years), until her death last Jan 2. He now runs her dance school as well as his own. He recently organized a much touted and very successful dance festival in Malaysia,  ”Narthaka”, along with the highly reputed Odissi dancer Ramli Ibrahim. Shanmugam has performed at many prestigious dance festivals all over India and other countries around the world. This is his first visit to the US. He has a large repertoire of old and traditional dances as well as more recent ones that are more ‘peppy’.  Shanmugam will be here from June 4 – June 20. He will be conducting workshops on June 6-7-8 and June 13-14-15, teaching private, semi private and group classes to all who are interested. Odissi Workshop

Aparupa ChatterjeeAparupa Chatterjee will conduct a 5-day workshop at Anjali center where you will learn basic Odissi ‘steppings’ and a Mangalacharan (invocatory first piece of Odissi). The piece is named Vakra Tunda Mahakaya. The plan is to perform at the 2nd North American Odissi convention 2013 at UT Austin on the June 9th. The 5-day workshop will be conducted on the following dates we will work on:

Saturday, May 4: 11-2 pm (basics completed)
Thursday, May 16: 5 – 8 pm (first para)
Friday, May 17: 5 – 8 pm (2nd para)
Saturday, May 18: 10 am – 1 pm (3rd para)
Sunday, May 19: 12 – 2 pm (last para)

Anjali Center for Performing Arts Celebrates its 38th Anniversary

One hundred and eighty students of the Anjali Center for Performing Arts presented an exquisitely crafted program, “Noopura Ninaadham” (the cadenced sound of ankle bells), at the Kaplan Theater, Jewish Community Center on March 16, 2013, as a special tribute to renowned dance Gurus, Kalaimamani Smt. K. J. Sarasa and Guru Padma Bhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam, who both passed away last year. An exponent of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, Rathna Kumar has the distinction of being the first student of the former and one of the foremost disciples of the latter.
